In this interview, I was able to catch up with David Miller(Glitch), Drennon Mackrell(Diamond J), Kip Brockway(Iron Man), and Jyothis John(Triple J) of the U.S. based Heavy Metal band Stained Red to ask them a few questions about their latest self-titled EP.
(Jacob) It's so good to finally be having this interview with your band:
(Glitch) " Thanks for having us on, we are super excited to be a part...”
(Diamond J) - Thanks for having us today we appreciate the opportunity.
(Iron Man) Praise the Lord brother great to be on your interview.
(Triple J) " Thanks for having us on the show”
(Jacob) So, can you give us some insight into what got you involved in the music industry and what is the ultimate purpose of the band?
(Glitch) Well, we are a ministry first then a band second. Our love for music is close to our want to serve God
and reach as any people as we can and what blessings we have had in our lives. Mainly we want to encourage and inspire people to be bold about their faith and pray they come to know Jesus.
(Diamond J) music is the one thing I have to communicate without speaking a word, I have and will always love music is my main reason to be involved, but our main goal is to be a Light in this Dark world and reach all people in all places.
(Iron Man) Stained Red was driven by the desire to write music that would sow seeds into the Kingdom. We also desired to be a light in the dark world. We also wanted to write music that would help people relate to the love of Christ.
(Triple J) The passion for music and serving God is what got me involved in the music industry.
(Jacob) Who was the founding member(s) and when did the band officially form?
(Glitch) Ironman and Diamond J started Stained Red. We have been through a couple of revisions, but we are all happy with the current lineup.
(Diamond J) IronMan and I started Stained Red in October 2018.
(Iron Man) IronMan and Diamond J started Stained Red in October 2018.
(Jacob) Can you shed some light on where your band's name came from and what is the meaning behind it?
(Glitch) “He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.” - John the Apostle - Revelation 19:13 -Imagine a robe “stained red” with the blood of Christ... that blood being
The Word of God.
(Diamond J) Our band name comes for the verse Revelation 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood...
(Iron Man) our name came from Rev 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood.
(Jacob) What brand of instruments do you all use and why do you prefer that specific brand over another?
(Glitch) I play Spector basses exclusively. I do not have an endorsement or anything (but would love to!) I absolutely love the tone and sound and the rich clarity cuts through the mix when you need it to and doesn’t get lost. I play though Ampeg amps/cabinets... well because... it's Ampeg J
(Diamond J) I use Schecter Guitars, really only because I love the sound and style of them.
(Iron Man) I have been using Sennheiser mic, love the quality for the price.
(Triple J) I use Tama drums, Paiste and Sabian cymbals, DW pedals. Tama Starclassics have great attack and low end tone. They make great hardware also. For studio work, I use Paiste Signatures and 2002s. They are bright and cut through heavy guitar distortion. My current pedal is the DW9000. The playability is smooth and gives a solid strike.
(Jacob) Do you all have any hobbies outside of music that help to rejuvenate or inspire creativity within your music?
(Glitch) We all listen to a large range of music, and it also shows a lot of our favorite bands & groups are from around the same era.... We think that shows a lot in our style/sound. We get our creativity mainly from warming up or sitting down just noodling out something... on bass or guitar... and if its catchy, we are all like...”DO THAT AGAIN!” LOL So we record it... even if its just on an iPhone... and save it. Sometimes it becomes a song, sometimes it becomes a solo or a riff... sometimes they get combined. And sometimes we forget about them.
(Diamond J) I listen to all types of music and that sparks creativity.
(Iron Man) I have been doing survival for the past 12 years, helps me to reconnect with God and it also gets those creative juices flowing for writing music. But my best time to write is early morning in my prayer room.
(Triple J) I listen to lots of music especially Progressive bands like Neal Morse, Transatlantic and other instrumental based music.
(Jacob) Are there any artists that have played a part in influencing the members of your band along with your band's sound?
(Glitch) Each of us have various influences from different bands or artist. I personally am a ABSOLUTE HUGE fan of Rex Brown form Pantera, Jason Newsted when he was in Metallica and I really like Eddie Jackson from Queensryche. They all play a part in my sound and tone.
(Diamond J) I was originally into secular music which defined my style and sound. Metallica,A7X, Pantera, G n R, I thank my parents for introducing rock to me since my youth.
(Iron Man) I have always loved Decyfer Down, their vocalists TJ Harris is phenomenal and has always inspired me to work harder on my singing.
(Triple J) Each of us have various influences. I was inspired to learn drums after watching a Bon Jovi video. But my main musical influence is Petra. Their biblical lyrics and ministry helped me through my early years. They were also the first band I saw live (2002, in India).
(Jacob) What is the biggest problem that you have had to overcome as a band?
(Glitch) I think it used to be creative differences but not so much anymore. I think it is
getting together to rehearse more without sacrificing the work/life balance.
(Diamond J) Finding the right people to be apart of something bigger than themselves. Also balance between life and work and band.
(Iron Man) We have always struggled financially as a band since we are a independent artist, all the funds come from our own pocket. Especially trying to record and buy merchandise.
(Triple J) Finding a balance between work, family and band.
(Jacob) Can you go into some detail about the musical direction on your latest EP release?
(Glitch) Heavier. It is definitely a different sound from our first album The Devil is going Down. With a whole new rhythm section, a different drummer... a new bass player... things will change. So, the mix is harder, heavier, and more dynamic and lyrically all the tacks are biblical (as always) and to me it is like a storytelling. I
love it (laughs).
(Diamond J) - we had been working really hard on putting out 4 songs that would be catchy and tell a great story! Each song tells its own story and so many people going through struggles can relate to them.
(Iron Man) we try to write music that has a lot of heart and feeling. But also keep a good solid crunch. And vocally I personally try to keep my lyrics understandable and heartfelt.
(Triple J) We went a bit more heavier with our latest material. Also exploring different rhythm.
(Jacob) Do you feel like you achieved what you set out to accomplish on your latest project?
(Glitch) I think we are all happy with the end product. We hope to keep bringing the music and getting batter as we work on everything.
(Diamond J ) Absolutely! Thank you Alex!!
(Iron Man) Absolutely, just praying for more radio stations to help push our music.
(Triple J) We are pleased with the latest EP sound and hope to continue in the same way.
(Jacob) What is your favorite song to perform, whether live or in studio, and why?
(Glitch) Too Cold to Love. Definitely. When I joined Stained Red, this was the first ’new (unrecorded) song’ that I was able to contribute to musically. It was my first original bassline. I like the gritty old-school sound as well.
(Diamond J) My personal favorite is Thank God for change. It was off our first album and the song has Guns N’ Roses style with amazing lyrics and we use this song to bring the light to people and when it’s time you can feel the Holy Spirit moving through the room.
(Iron Man) Probably "Exit-O-Dust". It’s just a fun song to sing and the lyrics are very biblical, and it blesses my heart to perform it live. And secondly, "I Won’t Give In", which is pretty much my testimony song.
(Triple J) If I have to pick one, I would say Too Cold To Love. That song has that old school metal vibe which I love. The third verse reminds me of how God saved me.
(Jacob) Were there any special or funny moments during the recording process of the album?
(Glitch) The recording process was new for me. This was my first time to professionally record anything. Alex Gerst (sound engineer) at Empire Sound is phenomenal. The guy is a recording Jedi. No joke.
(Diamond J) Honestly getting to rock for the rock and hang with great friends and men of God is the special moment!
(Iron Man) The funniest part of recording my vocals was trying to do all my screams the same way for 3 times in a row. Tough!!!
(Triple J) The recording process was a great experience for us. Alex Gerst(sound Engineer) was awesome and helped us feel at ease. He has a lot of cool toys and gadgets, which we tried on different parts of the songs. It was really exciting!
(Jacob) At this time, are you planning to keep moving forward as a band and are there any plans for future projects in the works?
(Glitch) Without a doubt, yes! We are currently putting together new material for our next album. Hoping that will be out next year some time.
(Diamond J) We are planning to write and release a full length album in the near future, currently working on new material.
(Iron Man) Yes, we pray that we can do this for many more years. Hopefully next year we can do a new album.
(Triple J) Yes, we are currently writing new material for our full length album.
(Jacob) Thank you for your time and thoughtful responses to each and every question. I am excited about your latest release and am looking forward to hearing more from the band in the future.
(Glitch) Thanks for having us... listening to us and supporting our music. The feedback has been great, and we could not do what we do without God, our family and friends for their support and our FANS! Our fans our great. The best!
(Diamond J ) - Thank you for having us we really appreciate the opportunity.
(Iron Man) I pray that the Lord will use our music to help God’s people to have a closer walk with Him.
(Triple J) Thanks for spending time with us today. We appreciate your reviewing our music and supporting us.
