In the early 1990's, two bands stepped onto the Alternative Rock scene with an Industrial sound that quickly captured the attention of those looking for something a little different from the norm. The two bands were 'Mortal' and 'Circle Of Dust' who both garnered a following within the christian Rock community due to their "experimental music" which incorporated Industrial sounds, techno, dance, and driving guitars into their arrangements. I believe one of the reasons for the success of Industrial bands comes from their uncanny ability to bridge the gap between Rock, Metal, and the Pop culture. Some other christian bands that also began to make their mark on the 90's Industrial scene were Deitiphobia, Argyle Park, and Chatterbox.
With all that said, this brings us to the band in question. In 2005 a new band stepped into the Industrial realm joining the ranks of previous mentioned bands. The band is simply called 'Laing' and is the brainchild of frontman & founder-Trevor Laing. Laing is an Industrial Hard Rock band from Arlington, Texas that infuses touches of Techno, and Dance music into their arrangements.

In 2005 Laing released their full-length debut album titled 'Ashes'. According to the band's bio - 'Ashes' is a spiritual journey out of darkness. Jesus Christ has truly redeemed artist Trevor Laing from the pit (Pslams 103:1-5) and this CD is about a time in Laing's life when hope was something to be found. But he found that hope in Jesus Christ and found life and strength and purpose.
If you are familiar with the well known modern Rock band - Skillet then when you hear the vocals of frontman-Trevor Laing, immediately who comes to mind is vocalist-John Cooper. I feel that this vocal style fits well with the industrial arrangements within this 2005 'Ashes' release. One thing that sets this industrial project apart from other bands of the same genre is the incorporation of Rap style vocals peppered here and there throughout the album. However, don't allow this to frighten you off because the majority of deliveries here are in relation to Hard Rock style vocals. There are only a few tracks that actually include sectional Rap style vocal deliveries - track-3 "Broken", track-4 "Hammer Down", track-7 "Damaged", and track-5 "Ashes". Even though said tracks include Rap vocals, they also include regular Hard Rock style vocals mixed throughout.
One thing that I have always loved about Industrial music is the guitars which usually have a slight industrial processed sound to them. The guitars on 'Ashes' follow this "Industrial rule" and shred with there relentless driving riffs.
