Adorned Graves formed in 1993 and is an old school Thrash Metal band with touches of Doom from a city known as Kaiserslautern in the southwestern part of Germany. Adorned Graves delivers up some of the heaviest melt your face off Thrash Metal one can find. The band's moniker has a double meaning - those who are like the Pharisees and teach that salvation is from the law or good works they are Adorned Graves(trying to adorn their spiritually dead flesh they are white washed tombs). The other meaning is for those who have washed in the blood of Jesus Christ through faith our impure graves are empty adorned by the cross that he did bear - so we are Adorned Graves - made holy through Jesus' sacrifice.
Even though Adorned Graves got their start back in 1993, It wouldn't be until 1998 that the band was to release their first demo complete with 6 tracks. Then in 2015, Adorned Graves gained some momentum with the release of their 4-track EP titled 'The Hand Of Death' which included the following tunes: 1. Adorned Graves, 2. Hand of Death, 3. Fightgrinder, 4. Accuser (Saint cover). 'The Hand Of Death' got the band some recognition however, with this release only boasting 4 tracks, it left the listener hungry for more.
In 2017 Adorned Graves released their highly anticipated full-length debut album titled 'Out From The Depth Of The Grave'. One thing that stands out about this 2017 offering is the diversity within the album as it moves from track to track. The first tune opens with acoustic guitar coupled with melancholic singing in the veins of Eric Clayton (Saviour Machine). Track two quickly lets you know that the band means business with a killer opening-80's style guitar solo and hammer pounding-blast beat drumming along with vocals in the veins of Guy Ritter (Tourniquet). Track 3 is full-on Thrash capable of peeling paint off the walls with more vocal work in the style of Guy Ritter(Tourniquet) that includes some Death Metal Vocals. I must say that some of the 80's style guitar play throughout is reminiscent of what's found in such bands as Guns N' Roses. Track 4 has some heavy drumming with plenty of blast beats accompanied by vocals in the veins of Roger Martinez(Vengeance Rising). Track 6 is progressive in nature opening with some Doomesqe guitar riffs coupled with melancholic vocals not unlike that which is found in Ecthirion's work. Track 7 is an instrumental piece that also includes some Doom coupled with some sick Thrash riffs. Track 8 opens with yet another lengthy instrumental in the veins of Vengeance Rising which moves into some Speed Metal. Track 9 is a short tune that brings to mind the band Tourniquet. Track 10's opening guitar play alludes to and sets up what we find in the instrumental on track 11. Track 10 also includes some heavy guitar play coupled with clean and Death vocals. Track 11 starts out with acoustic guitar play like unto that which the band opened up with in track 1 coupled with narration. About midway, the instrumental explodes into one of the finest guitar solos these ears have heard in a long time.
Lyrics are Christ centered and thought provoking where some allude to the meaning behind the story of Jonah being cast into the sea where we find symbolism of baptism. Jonah is symbolically washed in the blood of Christ, dead, and buried in Christ then rises with a new birth. This is what happens when we put our trust/faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and invoke only Him. Hats off to the band because many of the lyrics, on this 2017 release, come directly from the bible. The following lyric is a good example of what one can expect to find here:
"Out Of The Deep"
Out of my distress I called
To the lord my saviour
Out of the depths of the grave I cried
And you heard my voice
For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,
the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and breakers swept over me.
Then I said, I have been banished from your sight; The waters closed in
to take my life;
the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever
out of the belly of Sheol I cry – Kyrie eleison
my life is fainting away – Kyrie eleison
I´ll bring your life up from the pit
I´ll bring your life up from the pit
Jeschuata Elohim!
Book of Jonah, Iob 40,25 Psalm 104, 25f
Out of my distress I called
To the lord my saviour
Out of the depths of the grave I cried
And you heard my voice
For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,
the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and breakers swept over me.
Then I said, I have been banished from your sight; The waters closed in
to take my life;
the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever
out of the belly of Sheol I cry – Kyrie eleison
my life is fainting away – Kyrie eleison
I´ll bring your life up from the pit
I´ll bring your life up from the pit
